I-540 (Outer Loop) Southern Route Update
The North Carolina Turnpike Authority just released the latest proposal for the southern section. The potential routes has decreased from 9 to 5 with most of the southern routes under consideration having been eliminated. Here is the latest map just released (please be aware that this is a very large file that may take a while to load)
There is definitely a lot of history and information available about the I-540 Outer Loop being constructed around Raleigh. But it seems more confusion and misinformation than anything. A couple reasons for this are:
There are several names that are used for the highway.
It is referred to as I-540, the Outer Loop, the Northern Wake Expressway, the Triangle Expressway, the Raleigh Beltway, the Western Wake Freeway (Parkway), and other various names based on the varies sections. To confuse manners even more, it is scheduled to be named I-640 whenever it is completed. http://www.aaroads.com/guide.php?page=i0540nc
Locals refer to it as I-540 or the Outer Loop (this is because I-440 is referred to as The Beltline or the Inner Beltline).
There are different information sources
The northern section of the highway has been complete for several years and is a toll free road. The construction so far has been the responsibility of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). However, the south-western and south-eastern sections are scheduled to be toll highways. Because of this, the North Carolina Turnpike Authority enters the picture. So now there is overlapping information on both websites.
